Ami Hospital understands that most people who have been diagnosed with a hernia are looking for a solution that doesn’t affect their life for a very long time. That’s why we leverage advanced and minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques to treat hernias.
We house advanced technology and USFDA-approved diagnostic and surgical tools. Ami Hopsital also has an in-house team of general and laparoscopic surgeons who are experts in treating all types of hernias. The surgeons have 10+ years of experience in treating hernias and other conditions using open and laparoscopic technology, with a success rate higher than 95%
Diagnosis
Before opting for surgery, the doctor will physically examine the protruding area. For an accurate diagnosis, the patient might be asked to stand, strain or cough. For further diagnosis and to identify the safest technique for repair, the doctor might prescribe imaging tests such as an abdominal ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI.
Based on the test results, the doctor will determine the most suitable method and proceed with the treatment.
As with most surgeries, preparation for hernia surgery will involve restrictions in terms of diet. To ensure a safe treatment, one will be asked to refrain from drinking water, food, or any other fluids for six hours prior to the treatment, as food present within the digestive system might lead to certain complications during the surgery.
While some drugs might be prescribed to be taken beforehand to aid the surgery, a certain number of drugs should be avoided for up to a week before the surgery because of the various effects they can have on the body.
Drugs like aspirin, blood thinners, anti-inflammatory medications (arthritis medications), and Vitamin E should be avoided prior to a week before the surgery.
Preoperative preparations include medical evaluations such as blood tests, chest x-rays, and electrocardiography tests, depending on the person’s age and medical condition.
It is recommended to take a shower before going for the operation as the surgical area must be kept dry after the operation.
There is no doubt that laparoscopic hernia repair is beneficial for the patient. As compared to open surgery, the procedure is minimally invasive and has shorter downtime. The key benefits of laparoscopic surgery are given below-
• The incisions made during the surgery are keyhole-sized, which reduces further damage to the muscle wall.
• As the incisions are small, pain after the surgery is also minimal.
• Laparoscopic repair allows you to get back to daily activities quicker.
• The chances of bleeding and infection are also minimal during laparoscopic hernia surgery.
• Hospitalization longer than 24 hours won’t be necessary in case of laparoscopic surgery.
• The perforation in the muscle wall will recover faster than in open surgery.
• There will be negligible chances of hernia recurrence, and the risk of getting an incisional hernia is also reduced.
• Scarring is also minimal in this technique which means there is no aesthetic downside to the procedure
No, hernia mesh is not used for all types of hernia repair surgery. In many cases, the perforation in the abdominal wall can be closed without any support or reinforcement. Thus hernia mesh is not needed every time.
